Soggy Saturday with Heavy Rain Potential in Central KY
A deep moisture plume interacting with shortwave energy will bring widespread rain to the Commonwealth. The heaviest rainfall is expected to focus on the Bluegrass region, where totals could approach two inches.
Confidence Assessment
High confidence in the occurrence of statewide rain due to strong synoptic forcing and deep moisture. Moderate confidence in exact regional rainfall totals due to mesoscale banding potential.

Purchase Area
Expect rounds of rain through the day, with the highest chances in the morning and late evening. Total rainfall should be around 0.5 inches.
Northwest Pennyrile
A soggy day is in store with steady rain expected through the afternoon. Accumulations around 0.7 inches are likely.
Southwest Pennyrile
Most of the morning will be dry, but expect rain to move in for the afternoon and evening. Total rainfall of about 0.6 inches is expected.
Barren River
Rain will arrive in two main waves: one during the morning commute and another heavier wave in the evening. Accumulations around 0.7 inches.
Louisville Metro
Louisville will face heavy rain through the first half of the day. Expect around 1.1 inches of rain, which may lead to ponding on roads.
Lincoln Trail
A very wet day is in store for Elizabethtown and Bardstown. Expect around 0.9 inches of rain with the heaviest rates in the afternoon.
Lake Cumberland
Expect a damp day with showers increasing by the afternoon. Accumulations around 0.7 inches are expected.
Northern Kentucky
Northern Kentucky will see the lightest rain in the state. Expect mostly cloudy skies with a few passing showers totaling around 0.3 inches.
Inner Bluegrass
Lexington and surrounding areas will see the heaviest rain today. Expect around 1.9 inches of rain, which may cause minor street flooding.
Bluegrass Foothills
Breezy conditions will persist through the afternoon before a final wave of rain moves through. Accumulations around 0.6 inches.
Northeast Kentucky
Ashland and Morehead will see mostly cloudy skies and light, intermittent rain. Expect around 0.4 inches total.
Southeast Kentucky
Expect a soggy start to the day with heavy rain possible through midday, followed by breezy conditions. Accumulations around 0.7 inches.
Possible Outcomes
Weather forecasting involves uncertainty. Below are two scenarios representing the range of possible outcomes: the "Boom" scenario shows the worst-case/highest-impact result if conditions align unfavorably, while the "Bust" scenario shows the best-case/lowest-impact result if the forecast doesn't materialize as expected.
The 'Boom' Scenario
Convective training develops along a stalled convergence boundary in Central Kentucky, leading to localized rainfall totals exceeding 3 inches and resulting in flash flooding in urban areas and small streams.
The 'Bust' Scenario
Dry air entrainment from the north becomes more aggressive than modeled, pushing the moisture axis further south and limiting rainfall totals in Northern Kentucky and the Bluegrass Core to under a half-inch.
Model Disagreements
When models disagree, a call must be made to determine the most likely outcome. This decision is based on a combination of factors including model performance, historical data, and the models general accounting of each climatic region of Kentucky.
Northern Kentucky Moisture Cutoff
Models are struggling with the northern extent of the moisture plume. The NAM is notably drier (trace amounts) while the Euro spreads nearly 0.7 inches into the Cincinnati/Covington metro.
Why GFS Wins
The GFS provides a reasonable middle ground (0.3 inches) that accounts for the NAM's aggressive dry slot while acknowledging the Euro's tendency to smear light precip too far north.
The Bluegrass Deluge Disparity
A significant disagreement exists regarding the intensity of mesoscale banding over the Inner Bluegrass. The NAM and GFS suggest nearly 2 inches of rain due to high-efficiency convective bursts, while the Euro remains more conservative with a broader, lighter stratiform solution.
Why NAM Wins
The NAM and GFS both identify a strong mesoscale convergence signal and favorable jet dynamics that the coarser Euro typically under-forecasts in these high-moisture setups.
