Widespread Humid Rain Showers Move Across Kentucky
A tropical-like airmass with high moisture content will trigger multiple rounds of rain and embedded heavy downpours across the Commonwealth. While not a total washout for all, most regions will see measurable rainfall and persistent cloud cover, keeping temperatures slightly below mid-July norms.
Confidence Assessment
High confidence in widespread cloud cover and rain occurrence; however, moderate disagreement remains regarding the exact northern extent of the rain and localized intensity bullseyes in the southern terrain.

Purchase Area
Rain will be most persistent during the morning hours, with amounts around 0.8 inches. It will remain muggy and overcast for the remainder of the day.
Northwest Pennyrile
Expect a soggy day with nearly three-quarters of an inch of rain. The heaviest showers are likely early in the day.
Southwest Pennyrile
Off-and-on rain will continue throughout the day, totaling about 0.6 inches. High humidity will make it feel warmer than the actual temperature.
Barren River
Residents can expect a steady soak today with rainfall reaching about 0.6 inches. Clouds will remain stubborn through the evening.
Louisville Metro
The metro area will see rounds of light rain, primarily during the morning and midday. Total accumulations will be around 0.3 inches.
Lincoln Trail
Expect roughly half an inch of rain throughout the day. It will be a grey, damp Friday with little sun.
Lake Cumberland
Several rounds of rain, some heavy, are expected through the afternoon. Totals could reach near one inch.
Northern Kentucky
Northern Kentucky will see the least amount of rain today. While it will be mostly cloudy and humid, rainfall totals will only be around 0.1 inches.
Inner Bluegrass
The Bluegrass region will see off-and-on rain showers through the day, with around 0.4 inches of total accumulation expected.
Bluegrass Foothills
Temperatures will struggle to reach the upper 70s as persistent rain showers move through, totaling over half an inch.
Northeast Kentucky
Rain will likely arrive in the afternoon for Ashland and Morehead, with totals around 0.3 inches expected by evening.
Southeast Kentucky
Persistent rain, enhanced by the mountains, will total about 0.8 inches. Expect overcast skies and humid conditions all day.
Possible Outcomes
Weather forecasting involves uncertainty. Below are two scenarios representing the range of possible outcomes: the "Boom" scenario shows the worst-case/highest-impact result if conditions align unfavorably, while the "Bust" scenario shows the best-case/lowest-impact result if the forecast doesn't materialize as expected.
The 'Boom' Scenario
Localized training of rain cells, particularly along the southern terrain of the Cumberland Plateau and Coalfields, could lead to rainfall totals exceeding 2.5 inches, causing minor localized drainage flooding.
The 'Bust' Scenario
A more aggressive push of dry mid-level air from the Great Lakes could shunt the moisture plume further south, leaving Northern Kentucky and the I-64 corridor with little more than a few sprinkles and overcast skies.
Model Disagreements
When models disagree, a call must be made to determine the most likely outcome. This decision is based on a combination of factors including model performance, historical data, and the models general accounting of each climatic region of Kentucky.
Southern Terrain Enhancement
The NAM shows significantly higher rainfall totals (1.5"+) for the Southeast Coalfields and Lake Cumberland regions compared to the GFS and Euro (0.5"-0.7").
Why NAM Wins
The NAM's higher resolution typically captures orographic lift and terrain-induced moisture convergence in the Appalachian foothills more accurately than the coarser global models.
The Northern Moisture Cutoff
The NAM remains the dry outlier for Northern Kentucky, suggesting a sharp moisture gradient along the Ohio River, while the GFS and Euro insist on light measurable rain for the Cincinnati/Covington metro area.
Why EURO Wins
Global models generally handle the synoptic-scale moisture transport and the placement of the upper-level jet better than mesoscale models in a low-instability environment.
