In northeast Kentucky, Johnson and Martin. In south central Kentucky, Laurel, McCreary, Pulaski, Rockcastle, Wayne and Whitley. In southeast Kentucky, Bell, Breathitt, Clay, Floyd, Harlan, Jackson, Knott, Knox, Lee, Leslie, Letcher, Magoffin, Morgan, Owsley, Perry, Pike and Wolfe.
WHEN From 2 PM EDT this afternoon through Sunday morning.
IMPACTS Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - Repeated rounds of showers and thunderstorms producing locally heavy rainfall are expected from this afternoon into the weekend. Already wet soils in some areas will make those locations more susceptible to flooding. Localized significant flooding may develop for areas that see several inches of rainfall. - http://www.weather.gov/safety/flood

WHEN Through Sunday morning.
IMPACTS Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - Rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected through Saturday night across the region. Locally heavy rainfall is expected at times, with the potential for instances of flash flooding given recent rainfall, especially in locations that have compromised soils. Flooding potential will be greatest on Friday and Saturday when showers and thunderstorms will be numerous. - http://www.weather.gov/safety/flood

July Heat Meets Tropical Moisture; Heavy Rain West
A sweltering and humid Thursday is expected across Kentucky as a tropical moisture plume intersects a sagging surface trough. This will result in a split weather story: intense convective downpours in Western Kentucky and muggy, overcast conditions with light rain in the East.
Confidence Assessment
Confidence is high for a hot and humid day, but significant model disagreement regarding the nature of precipitation (convective bursts vs. steady light rain) lowers the overall score.

Purchase Area
A steamy July day is ahead for the Purchase area. Temperatures will climb into the low 90s under building clouds. Scattered rain and a few storms will arrive during the evening hours, bringing around 0.3 inches of rain.
Northwest Pennyrile
The most impactful weather today will focus on the Owensboro area. After a hot afternoon, a line of heavy rain and storms is expected to move in after 6 PM, with accumulations around 1.1 inches possible.
Southwest Pennyrile
Expect a very humid day with plenty of sunshine through the afternoon. A few light showers may drift in late in the evening, but most areas will remain dry with accumulations around 0.1 inches.
Barren River
Bowling Green will see a mix of clouds and sun today. While the humidity will be high, rain will be sporadic and light, mostly appearing as evening sprinkles around 0.1 inches.
Louisville Metro
Louisville will dodge the heaviest rain today. Expect a hot and sticky afternoon with temperatures near 90. A stray shower is possible by the evening commute, but accumulations will be minimal.
Lincoln Trail
Expect a warm and damp afternoon for the Lincoln Trail area. Light rain showers will move through periodically, resulting in accumulations around 0.1 inches.
Lake Cumberland
A humid start to the day with a few morning showers on the plateau. The afternoon will be mostly dry but very sticky, with rainfall around 0.1 inches.
Northern Kentucky
Expect some early morning rain for the Cincinnati/Northern KY area. While the rest of the day will be mostly dry, the high humidity will persist, with rain accumulations around 0.2 inches.
Inner Bluegrass
Lexington will experience a typical humid summer day. A few light morning showers will give way to a breezy and mostly cloudy afternoon. Rain amounts will be light, around 0.1 inches.
Bluegrass Foothills
Expect localized fog and a few light showers during the morning hours. The afternoon will stay mostly cloudy and warm, with rain totals around 0.1 inches.
Northeast Kentucky
Northeast Kentucky will see the most consistent rainfall today. Light but persistent rain is expected, particularly in the morning, with accumulations around 0.4 inches.
Southeast Kentucky
A damp day is in store for the mountains. Light rain showers will be most frequent in the morning, followed by a very muggy afternoon. Accumulations around 0.2 inches are expected.
Possible Outcomes
Weather forecasting involves uncertainty. Below are two scenarios representing the range of possible outcomes: the "Boom" scenario shows the worst-case/highest-impact result if conditions align unfavorably, while the "Bust" scenario shows the best-case/lowest-impact result if the forecast doesn't materialize as expected.
The 'Boom' Scenario
If the surface trough stalls directly over the Pennyrile and Purchase regions while the cap breaks early, localized rainfall totals could exceed 2.5 inches with heat indices climbing to 100 degrees before storms arrive.
The 'Bust' Scenario
If widespread cloud cover from the Gulf moisture plume remains thick through the afternoon, temperatures will struggle to reach the mid-80s, and the lack of surface heating will limit storms to weak, stratiform rain with little accumulation.
Model Disagreements
When models disagree, a call must be made to determine the most likely outcome. This decision is based on a combination of factors including model performance, historical data, and the models general accounting of each climatic region of Kentucky.
The Cloud Suppression Duel
The Euro suggests heavy cloud cover will keep temperatures in the mid-80s, whereas the NAM and GFS allow for enough insolation to push temperatures into the lower 90s.
Why BLEND Wins
While the moisture plume is significant, Kentucky in July typically reaches the upper 80s even with significant cloud cover unless precipitation is continuous.
Convective Intensity vs. Stratiform Drizzle
The NAM is aggressively forecasting deep convective development (1500+ J/kg CAPE) along a surface trough in Western KY, while the GFS and Euro maintain a much more stable, stratiform rain profile with zero to minimal CAPE.
Why NAM Wins
In high-moisture July environments, mesoscale boundaries like the sagging trough in the NAM often serve as the primary trigger for pulse convection that global models tend to 'smear' into light stratiform rain.
