Sultry July Heat with Isolated Afternoon Showers
Kentucky will face a typical mid-summer pattern this Thursday as high heat and humidity settle across the Commonwealth. Most regions will remain dry under a strong ridge, but a weak mid-level shortwave and orographic lift will trigger isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms in the western river basins and the eastern mountains.
Confidence Assessment
Strong model agreement on the thermal profile and ridge position; the only uncertainty lies in the exact timing and coverage of the pulse-convection in the afternoon.
Get Personalized Forecasts
Choose which region in Kentucky you're interested in and we'll always show you that one first. You can change your selected region by clicking the "Star" icon on any regional forecast.
Purchase Area
Expect a very humid day with scattered light rain showers moving through between mid-morning and late afternoon. Accumulations will be light, around 0.05 inches.
Northwest Pennyrile
Temperatures will soar to 94 degrees today. A few morning clouds and sprinkles are possible, but the afternoon will be dominated by sun and high humidity.
Southwest Pennyrile
It will feel like 100 degrees today. Scattered light rain is possible during the afternoon hours, though most areas will see less than a tenth of an inch.
Barren River
Expect high humidity and a 60% chance of showers through the afternoon. Rain will be hit-or-miss, with accumulations around 0.1 inches.
Louisville Metro
The city will bake today with a high of 96 degrees. While a stray sprinkle cannot be ruled out, expect dry and very uncomfortable conditions.
Lincoln Trail
A warm and humid day for Elizabethtown with highs near 92. A stray afternoon shower is possible but unlikely.
Lake Cumberland
Perfect lake weather, if you can handle the heat. Highs will reach 93 with mostly sunny skies and very little wind.
Northern Kentucky
Expect lots of sunshine and high heat today with temperatures hitting 95 degrees. Breezy conditions will provide only minor relief.
Inner Bluegrass
Lexington will see plenty of sun and dry heat today. Highs will be around 92 degrees with high humidity.
Bluegrass Foothills
Stay alert for a few quick showers passing through between 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM. Highs will be near 90.
Northeast Kentucky
Ashland will be one of the hottest spots in the state, with highs climbing to 96 degrees under intense sun.
Southeast Kentucky
Afternoon rain is expected in the mountains today. While not a washout, expect around 0.1 inches of rainfall between Hazard and Pikeville.
Possible Outcomes
Weather forecasting involves uncertainty. Below are two scenarios representing the range of possible outcomes: the "Boom" scenario shows the worst-case/highest-impact result if conditions align unfavorably, while the "Bust" scenario shows the best-case/lowest-impact result if the forecast doesn't materialize as expected.
The 'Boom' Scenario
If the mid-level cap is weaker than modeled and moisture levels maximize, scattered pulse thunderstorms could develop statewide, offering localized relief from the heat but bringing a risk of brief, heavy downpours and gusty winds.
The 'Bust' Scenario
If the 'Heat Dome' subsidence wins out, convective inhibition will prevent any rain from reaching the ground, resulting in a completely dry, blistering day with temperatures potentially exceeding 100°F in urban centers.
Model Disagreements
When models disagree, a call must be made to determine the most likely outcome. This decision is based on a combination of factors including model performance, historical data, and the models general accounting of each climatic region of Kentucky.
The Western Moisture Plume
The GFS and Euro show a plume of moisture and weak lift moving into Western KY, supporting rain. The NAM remains aggressively dry in the west, keeping the moisture suppressed further south in Tennessee.
Why EURO Wins
The ECMWF (Euro) typically handles the progression of weak, decaying shortwaves through a ridge better than the NAM, which often suffers from a dry bias in high-pressure regimes.
The Northeast Heat Spike
The GFS is forecasting triple-digit heat (101°F) in the Ashland area, while the NAM and Euro suggest a more modest (but still hot) 94-96°F.
Why BLEND Wins
The GFS frequently overestimates maximum temperatures in the narrow valleys of Northeast KY during high-amplitude ridging. A blend toward the NAM/Euro consensus is more realistic.
