Morning Rain Followed by a Muggy Afternoon Clearing
A mid-level shortwave trough will swing through the Commonwealth on Sunday, bringing a swath of rain that will be heaviest across Western and Central Kentucky during the morning hours. Rainfall will taper off from west to east by the afternoon, leaving behind a humid airmass with temperatures peaking in the mid-to-upper 80s.
Confidence Assessment
High confidence in the presence of rain and warm temperatures, but significant model disagreement regarding localized rainfall totals in Western Kentucky and the exact timing of the clearing trend in the afternoon reduces the overall score.

Purchase Area
Rain showers will be brief and early, mostly wrapping up before mid-morning. The rest of the day will be warm and humid with sun peaking through the clouds by afternoon. Expect accumulations around 0.1 inches.
Northwest Pennyrile
Expect a very wet morning with steady rain that may be heavy at times. Conditions will improve by mid-afternoon as the rain moves east, though it will remain very humid. Expect rainfall totals around 0.85 inches.
Southwest Pennyrile
The best chance for rain will be during the morning hours, with clearing skies expected for the afternoon. It will be a hot and sticky day with highs near 90. Expect light accumulations around 0.15 inches.
Barren River
A soggy start to the day is expected in Bowling Green, with steady rain through lunch. Some localized heavy downpours could lead to ponding on roads. Expect rainfall around 1 inch.
Louisville Metro
The Louisville area will likely escape the heaviest rain, seeing only spotty showers or drizzle during the morning commute followed by a muggy afternoon. Expect light rainfall around 0.05 inches.
Lincoln Trail
Rain will be most persistent during the morning, especially around Elizabethtown. Skies will remain mostly cloudy through much of the day. Expect rainfall around 0.5 inches.
Lake Cumberland
Expect a damp day around the lake, with showers persisting through early afternoon before slowly tapering off. Highs will stay in the low 80s. Expect rainfall around 0.55 inches.
Northern Kentucky
Most of Northern Kentucky will stay dry today, though a few sprinkles or light drizzle cannot be ruled out before 10 AM. Expect only a trace of rain.
Inner Bluegrass
Rain will be hit-or-miss in the Lexington area, with the best chance occurring mid-morning. The afternoon should turn mostly dry but remain cloudy. Expect rainfall around 0.15 inches.
Bluegrass Foothills
Expect a gray and damp day with light rain showers occurring periodically through the early afternoon. Highs will reach the low 80s. Expect rainfall around 0.25 inches.
Northeast Kentucky
Ashland will see some of the warmest temperatures in the state today, reaching the 90s before rain arrives late in the day. Expect light rainfall around 0.1 inches.
Southeast Kentucky
Expect persistent clouds and periods of rain throughout the day in Hazard and Pikeville. It will be humid and somewhat cooler than the rest of the state. Expect rainfall around 0.4 inches.
Possible Outcomes
Weather forecasting involves uncertainty. Below are two scenarios representing the range of possible outcomes: the "Boom" scenario shows the worst-case/highest-impact result if conditions align unfavorably, while the "Bust" scenario shows the best-case/lowest-impact result if the forecast doesn't materialize as expected.
The 'Boom' Scenario
The NAM's aggressive moisture convergence verifies, leading to localized rainfall totals exceeding 2 inches across the Northwest Pennyrile and Barren River regions, resulting in minor urban flooding.
The 'Bust' Scenario
A faster arrival of the mid-level dry slot, as suggested by the Euro, cuts off precipitation by mid-morning, leaving most of the state with less than a quarter-inch of rain.
Model Disagreements
When models disagree, a call must be made to determine the most likely outcome. This decision is based on a combination of factors including model performance, historical data, and the models general accounting of each climatic region of Kentucky.
The Pennyrile Precipitation Peak
A significant disagreement exists regarding rainfall totals in the Northwest Pennyrile. The NAM predicts a localized bullseye of 2.31 inches, while the GFS and Euro suggest much lower totals closer to 0.4-0.6 inches.
Why BLEND Wins
While the NAM often over-forecasts localized bullseyes (Bullseye Effect), its superior resolution of low-level convergence suggests the global models are likely under-forecasting the convective potential in this moisture-rich environment. A blended approach favoring 0.8-1.0 inches is more physically grounded.
The Afternoon Dry Slot
The GFS keeps light rain 'smeared' across the state through the evening, whereas the Euro and NAM show a distinct clearing line moving east after 18z.
Why EURO Wins
The Euro is historically more reliable with the timing of dry slots and moisture cutoffs. The GFS 'Smear Effect' often results in phantom light precipitation that fails to reach the ground once the main forcing exits.
