Arctic Blast: Flash Freeze and Mountain Snow Expected
A powerful arctic cold front will sweep across Kentucky on Monday, causing a dramatic 30 to 40-degree temperature drop, damaging wind gusts, and a transition from heavy rain to accumulating snow.
Confidence Assessment
High confidence in the timing of the temperature crash and wind gusts; moderate to low confidence on snow totals due to the speed of the dry slot and warm antecedent ground temperatures.

Purchase Area
Rain will exit early in the morning. While a few snow flurries are possible, no significant accumulation is expected.
Northwest Pennyrile
A soaking rain will transition to snow mid-morning. Accumulations around half an inch are possible on grassy surfaces.
Southwest Pennyrile
Rain will end by late morning. Falling temperatures and gusty winds will dominate the afternoon, with only trace snow expected.
Barren River
Expect a wet morning with over an inch of rain. A light dusting of snow is possible by evening as it turns much colder.
Louisville Metro
Rain transitions to light snow by midday. While snow amounts will be less than half an inch, wet roads will likely freeze quickly.
Lincoln Trail
A rainy morning will turn into a messy mix of snow and sleet in the afternoon. Watch for icy spots on the evening commute.
Lake Cumberland
Heavy morning rain will give way to a few snow flurries. Wind gusts near 45 mph will make it feel much colder.
Northern Kentucky
Heavy rain transitions to snow by mid-afternoon. Accumulations of 1 inch are possible, with wind gusts over 50 mph.
Inner Bluegrass
Rain will change to snow during the afternoon. Strong winds will blow snow around, and a rapid freeze is likely.
Bluegrass Foothills
A soggy morning with heavy rain will transition to snow by evening. A light coating around half an inch is possible.
Northeast Kentucky
Expect rain to turn to snow by mid-afternoon. About 1 inch of snow is possible on grassy surfaces by tonight.
Southeast Kentucky
Heavy rain will transition to accumulating snow by late afternoon. Over 2 inches of snow is possible in the mountains.
Possible Outcomes
Weather forecasting involves uncertainty. Below are two scenarios representing the range of possible outcomes: the "Boom" scenario shows the worst-case/highest-impact result if conditions align unfavorably, while the "Bust" scenario shows the best-case/lowest-impact result if the forecast doesn't materialize as expected.
The 'Boom' Scenario
The moisture lingers longer in the cold air, and the deformation zone stalls over Central and Eastern KY, resulting in widespread 2-4 inch snow totals and a severe flash freeze on all roadways.
The 'Bust' Scenario
A faster dry slot arrival cuts off precipitation immediately following the frontal passage, leaving only trace flurries and minimizing accumulation to the highest peaks of the Southeast Coalfields.
Model Disagreements
When models disagree, a call must be made to determine the most likely outcome. This decision is based on a combination of factors including model performance, historical data, and the models general accounting of each climatic region of Kentucky.
The Purchase Snow Outlier
The GFS predicts nearly 2 inches of snow for the Purchase region, while all other models (NAM, GEM, Euro) show the moisture exiting well before the column cools sufficiently for anything beyond a trace.
Why NONE Wins
The GFS is identified as a significant outlier here, likely over-forecasting light precipitation coverage (the 'Smear Effect') in a region where the dry slot is most certain to arrive first.
The Post-Frontal Moisture Fight
The GFS and NAM maintain a deeper saturated layer behind the surface front, supporting 1-2 inches of snow, while the Euro aggressively introduces a dry slot that shuts down precipitation almost immediately after the temperature crash.
Why NAM Wins
The NAM's high-resolution handling of anafront structures and terrain-induced moisture retention in the Bluegrass and Coalfields is typically superior to the GFS 'smear' or the Euro's occasionally over-aggressive dry slots in strong cold air advection regimes.
