Those traveling should be prepared for locally hazardous travel conditions and quickly changing visibilities, and allow extra time to reach your destination.
Special Weather Statement
Special Weather Statement issued February 4 at 6:59AM EST by NWS Jackson KY
Light snow, freezing drizzle, and drizzle will be possible today. Precipitation will increase in coverage late this morning and then persist through the afternoon before diminishing tonight. Any snow and ice accumulations will be light, with less than one inch of snow accumulation and no more than a light glaze of ice. Accumulation potential is greatest along and south of the KY Highway 80/Hal Rogers Parkway corridor. Temperatures will hover near the freezing mark through mid-afternoon, then begin to drop into the teens overnight. This will result in a hard freeze of any melted ice and snow. In addition to the light wintry precipitation, areas of fog will reduce visibility at times. Locally dense fog may result in visibility reductions of one-quarter mile or less, especially southeast of the KY Highway 80/Hal Rogers Parkway corridor. Travelers are advised to use caution. Use low-beam headlights and increase your following distance. Avoid sudden braking and/or accelerations through curves and when approaching intersections, in case you encounter slick roads.

Arctic Chill Grips Kentucky with Lingering Mountain Snow
A sharp contrast exists across the Commonwealth today as an arctic high-pressure system builds from the northwest while a departing shortwave trough maintains light snow showers across the eastern mountains. Western and Central Kentucky will see clearing skies and biting cold, while the Southeast Coalfields deal with light, accumulating snow through the evening.
Confidence Assessment
Confidence is high regarding the arctic temperatures and clearing trend in the west, but moderate regarding the exact placement of the 1-inch snow line in the southeast and the persistence of flurries in the Bluegrass.

Purchase Area
Expect a very cold but sunny day across the Purchase area. Any early morning clouds will vanish, leaving blue skies and temperatures that struggle to reach the mid-30s.
Northwest Pennyrile
It will be a sunny but cold day along the Ohio River. High temperatures will struggle to reach the freezing mark, and a steady breeze will keep wind chills in the teens.
Southwest Pennyrile
Blue skies will return quickly this morning. It will remain quite chilly throughout the day with highs only reaching the lower 30s.
Barren River
Clouds will linger for the first part of the day before sunshine breaks through. It will be a cold day with high temperatures near 34 degrees.
Louisville Metro
Expect a raw, cold winter day in the Louisville area. Skies will stay mostly cloudy for much of the day with temperatures remaining below freezing.
Lincoln Trail
Clouds will be stubborn today, making for a cold and gray afternoon. Highs will only reach the freezing mark.
Lake Cumberland
A mix of rain and snow showers will transition to all light snow during the morning. Accumulations around half an inch are possible, mainly on grassy surfaces.
Northern Kentucky
The sun will be out, but it will do little to fight the arctic chill. Temperatures will stay in the 20s all day with wind chills in the single digits tonight.
Inner Bluegrass
Expect a light coating of snow early this morning, potentially leaving around 0.2 inches of accumulation. Skies will stay cloudy and very cold throughout the day.
Bluegrass Foothills
Light snow will fall periodically through the early afternoon, with accumulations around half an inch. Use caution on bridges and overpasses.
Northeast Kentucky
A quick coating of snow is possible this morning. The afternoon will be dry but very cold and cloudy.
Southeast Kentucky
Steady light snow showers will last throughout the day and evening. Accumulations around 1.5 inches are likely, with higher totals possible in the mountains. Roads could become slick by evening.
Possible Outcomes
Weather forecasting involves uncertainty. Below are two scenarios representing the range of possible outcomes: the "Boom" scenario shows the worst-case/highest-impact result if conditions align unfavorably, while the "Bust" scenario shows the best-case/lowest-impact result if the forecast doesn't materialize as expected.
The 'Boom' Scenario
The 'Boom' scenario involves the shortwave slowing its exit, allowing orographic enhancement in the Southeast Coalfields to maximize snow-to-liquid ratios (SLRs) as the arctic air deepens, potentially pushing local totals toward 3 inches in the highest peaks of the Appalachians.
The 'Bust' Scenario
The 'Bust' scenario occurs if the dry arctic wedge pushes east faster than modeled, cutting off moisture in the Bluegrass and Coalfields by midday and limiting accumulations to a mere dusting or less.
Model Disagreements
When models disagree, a call must be made to determine the most likely outcome. This decision is based on a combination of factors including model performance, historical data, and the models general accounting of each climatic region of Kentucky.
The Southeast Snow Squeeze
A disagreement exists between the global models (GFS/Euro) and the mesoscale/regional models (NAM/GEM) regarding snowfall intensity in the Southeast Coalfields. The globals are more aggressive with QPF and mountain enhancement, while the NAM/GEM suggest drier air will limit totals.
Why EURO Wins
The Euro's handling of the moisture cut-off and the synoptic track of the shortwave trough provides a more balanced middle ground between the NAM's dry bias and the GFS's tendency to over-smear light precipitation.
The Bluegrass Dusting Debate
The NAM and GEM suggest a narrow corridor of measurable light snow (0.2-0.5") as the clipper-like system moves through, while the GFS and Euro keep the Bluegrass Core largely dry with only non-measurable flurries.
Why NAM Wins
The NAM's superior resolution of shallow moisture and boundary-layer cooling often captures these light 'clipper' dustings better than global models which may evaporate too much QPF in the low levels.
