Frigid Arctic Grip Tightens Across the Commonwealth
An intense Arctic air mass is firmly established across Kentucky, bringing the coldest temperatures of the season. High pressure centered over the Ohio Valley will maintain mostly clear skies for the northern and central regions, while weak atmospheric energy produces light, nuisance snow flurries in the southeastern mountains and far western counties.
Confidence Assessment
High confidence exists regarding the frigid temperatures and dangerous wind chills. Lower confidence remains for the exact timing and location of trace snow flurries due to significant low-level dry air that may cause precipitation to evaporate before hitting the ground.

Purchase Area
Clouds will increase throughout the day with a few light snow flurries possible after sunset. Accumulations are not expected to exceed a dusting.
Northwest Pennyrile
A gray and very cold day is on tap with temperatures staying well below freezing. Highs will only reach the mid-20s.
Southwest Pennyrile
Expect overcast skies and frigid conditions. Highs will struggle to reach 28 degrees with a steady morning breeze.
Barren River
A stray morning flurry is possible, otherwise expect cloudy and very cold conditions. Temperatures will be in the low 20s.
Louisville Metro
Dangerously cold temperatures will grip the city. Morning lows will hover near zero with highs only in the low 20s.
Lincoln Trail
Clear skies will provide no relief from the bitter cold. Wind chills will be well below zero during the morning hours.
Lake Cumberland
Expect bright sunshine but deceptive warmth. Temperatures will struggle to reach the low 20s despite the clear skies.
Northern Kentucky
Northern Kentucky will be one of the coldest spots in the state. Morning wind chills will drop to near -10 degrees.
Inner Bluegrass
Sunny skies will dominate, but it will be a bitterly cold day with wind chills staying in the single digits or below zero.
Bluegrass Foothills
Clear, sunny skies will be accompanied by frigid temperatures. Morning lows will start in the single digits.
Northeast Kentucky
Sunshine will be plentiful, but cold air trapped in the valleys will keep temperatures well below the freezing mark.
Southeast Kentucky
Expect light snow flurries through the morning with accumulations around 0.2 inches. It will be a very cold day with highs in the low 20s.
Possible Outcomes
Weather forecasting involves uncertainty. Below are two scenarios representing the range of possible outcomes: the "Boom" scenario shows the worst-case/highest-impact result if conditions align unfavorably, while the "Bust" scenario shows the best-case/lowest-impact result if the forecast doesn't materialize as expected.
The 'Boom' Scenario
If the moisture depth in the southeast is slightly higher than modeled, localized mountain peaks could see up to one inch of fluffy snow accumulation.
The 'Bust' Scenario
If the intense low-level dry air wins out, even the light flurries in the west and southeast will evaporate as virga, leaving the state entirely dry but still bitterly cold.
Model Disagreements
When models disagree, a call must be made to determine the most likely outcome. This decision is based on a combination of factors including model performance, historical data, and the models general accounting of each climatic region of Kentucky.
The Mountain Flurry Fight
GEM and GFS models suggest enough moisture exists in the 850-700mb layer to produce light snow in the Southeast Coalfields, while the NAM remains bone dry.
Why GEM Wins
GEM and GFS typically resolve orographic enhancement better in Arctic regimes where trace moisture is often wrung out by the higher terrain of the Appalachian foothills.
The Western Clipper Discrepancy
The Euro brings a late-evening flurry risk to the Purchase region, whereas the GFS and NAM maintain clear to cloudy skies with no precipitation.
Why UNCERTAIN Wins
Confidence is low as the moisture profile is marginal; however, the Euro's handling of late-day shortwaves in zonal flow is often superior, leading to a compromise forecast of trace flurries.
