Arctic Grip: Dangerous Cold and High-Ratio Snow Showers
A brutal arctic air mass will remain entrenched across Kentucky this Saturday. Temperatures will struggle to reach the 20s, while a series of weak disturbances will trigger scattered light snow showers and flurries. While liquid moisture is sparse, the extreme cold will allow for very efficient, fluffy snow accumulation, particularly in the southeastern mountains.
Confidence Assessment
High confidence regarding the arctic temperatures and dangerous wind chills. Moderate confidence on snow totals due to the extreme sensitivity of high-ratio snow to tiny variations in moisture.

Purchase Area
A brutally cold Saturday is ahead. While clouds will dominate most of the day, a quick burst of light snow is possible during the morning, which may leave a very thin dusting on some surfaces.
Northwest Pennyrile
Temperatures will stay in the teens for most of the day. Expect light snow showers to develop this afternoon, potentially leaving around 0.3 inches of fluffy snow.
Southwest Pennyrile
Prepare for dangerous wind chills near zero. Light snow showers are likely, especially in the afternoon and evening, with accumulations near 0.2 inches.
Barren River
Biting winds will make it feel well below zero at times. Scattered snow showers will move through during the afternoon, resulting in a dusting on most surfaces.
Louisville Metro
One of the coldest days of the season is expected. Light snow flurries are likely in the afternoon, but accumulations will be very minimal, likely just a dusting.
Lincoln Trail
Bitterly cold temperatures will persist all day. Some light snow showers could develop this evening, leaving a coating around 0.2 inches.
Lake Cumberland
A cold and snowy day is in store. Light snow showers will occur periodically, likely accumulating to around half an inch by the end of the day.
Northern Kentucky
Extreme cold is the primary story here. While some light flurries are possible, no accumulation is expected, but wind chills will drop to 15 below zero.
Inner Bluegrass
Expect a gray and bone-chilling day. Wind chills will stay below zero for most of the morning. While clouds will move in, we don't expect any measurable snow.
Bluegrass Foothills
A very cold day with clouds persisting throughout. A few light snow flurries are possible late in the evening, leaving a dusting on the grass.
Northeast Kentucky
Temperatures will remain in the teens under overcast skies. While the weather will stay dry, the extreme cold will be a significant concern.
Southeast Kentucky
Light but steady snow showers will persist through the first half of the day. Expect around 1.5 inches of fluffy snow to accumulate, potentially making travel slippery.
Possible Outcomes
Weather forecasting involves uncertainty. Below are two scenarios representing the range of possible outcomes: the "Boom" scenario shows the worst-case/highest-impact result if conditions align unfavorably, while the "Bust" scenario shows the best-case/lowest-impact result if the forecast doesn't materialize as expected.
The 'Boom' Scenario
If the mid-level moisture profile remains fully saturated and SLRs reach 20:1, widespread dustings of 0.5-1.0 inch could occur across central KY, with the mountains of the southeast exceeding 3 inches.
The 'Bust' Scenario
Significant low-level dry air could result in most precipitation evaporating as virga, leaving the state with nothing more than scattered flurries and no measurable accumulation.
Model Disagreements
When models disagree, a call must be made to determine the most likely outcome. This decision is based on a combination of factors including model performance, historical data, and the models general accounting of each climatic region of Kentucky.
Southeast Orographics
Models disagree on the intensity of mountain enhancement. The GFS shows an aggressive 3-inch bullseye, whereas the Euro and NAM are more conservative with 1-1.5 inches.
Why BLEND Wins
The GFS likely suffers from its 'smear' bias, over-forecasting the total liquid. A blend of the Euro and GEM provides a more realistic 1.5-inch consensus given the limited moisture fetch.
The Western Moisture Gap
The ECMWF remains significantly drier across Western Kentucky, showing almost no precipitation for the Purchase and Pennyrile regions, while the NAM and GEM suggest a weak clipper-like feature will bring enough moisture for a light dusting.
Why NAM Wins
The NAM typically handles shallow moisture layers and cold-sector clippers with better precision in the short term, and the GEM's handling of the arctic pool supports the moisture retention.
