Special Weather Statement
Special Weather Statement issued January 29 at 3:22PM EST by NWS Louisville KY
A narrow band of light snow is expected to develop tonight as far north as the I-64 corridor. However, this swath of snow will then spread southeast across central and eastern Kentucky Friday morning into the afternoon hours. Minor accumulation of dry, fluffy snow is possible - perhaps up to an inch east of I-65 and south of the Bluegrass Parkway. East-central Kentucky, especially the I-75 corridor from Richmond southward, has the best chance of seeing 1 inch or more of accumulation. This band of light snow could quickly coat previously plowed/treated roads once again, which could lead to minor travel impacts on top of the lingering impacts from the winter storm. Slow down and use caution while traveling.

Arctic Air Grips Kentucky with Scattered Light Snow
A frigid arctic air mass is firmly entrenched across the Commonwealth, bringing dangerously cold temperatures and scattered light, powdery snow showers. The most persistent snow will focus across the southern and eastern regions, while Northern Kentucky remains dry but bitterly cold with sub-zero wind chills.
Confidence Assessment
Confidence is very high for the temperature profile and the presence of clouds/flurries. However, confidence is lower regarding exact accumulation totals due to the high risk of virga/sublimation in the dry arctic air.
Get Personalized Forecasts
Choose which region in Kentucky you're interested in and we'll always show you that one first. You can change your selected region by clicking the "Star" icon on any regional forecast.
Purchase Area
Expect a cold and cloudy day with occasional light snow flurries during the morning hours. Accumulations will be minimal, likely just a light dusting on the grass as dry air limits totals.
Northwest Pennyrile
Light snow showers will move through during the morning commute. While totals will be very low, the frigid ground means it will stick immediately. Wind chills will remain in the single digits through much of the day.
Southwest Pennyrile
Light snow flurries are expected during the first half of the day. Around 0.2 inches of accumulation is possible, primarily on grassy surfaces. Breezy conditions will make it feel like the single digits.
Barren River
Expect periodic light snow throughout the afternoon. Accumulations around half an inch are expected, which may lead to slick spots on untreated roads.
Louisville Metro
Very cold conditions will persist with mostly cloudy skies. While a stray flurry is possible, no measurable snow accumulation is expected. Wind chills will stay in the single digits for much of the morning.
Lincoln Trail
Light snow will move through the region today, resulting in about half an inch of accumulation. Roads will be cold, so any snow will stick immediately.
Lake Cumberland
Light but steady snow will fall this afternoon and evening. Accumulations of nearly an inch are likely, leading to potentially slick travel conditions on secondary roads.
Northern Kentucky
The primary story will be the extreme cold. Wind chills will dip as low as 10 degrees below zero this morning. While the sky will be cloudy, no snow is expected.
Inner Bluegrass
Expect a gray and very cold day in the Lexington area. A few light snow flurries are possible, but they will not result in any significant accumulation.
Bluegrass Foothills
Light snow flurries will be common throughout the day, leading to about half an inch of accumulation. This will easily coat grassy and untreated surfaces.
Northeast Kentucky
Temperatures will be bone-chillingly cold, especially in the valleys. While it will be a cloudy day, no snow accumulation is expected.
Southeast Kentucky
The mountains will see the most snow in the state today. Steady light snow this afternoon and evening will lead to around 1.5 inches of total accumulation.
Possible Outcomes
Weather forecasting involves uncertainty. Below are two scenarios representing the range of possible outcomes: the "Boom" scenario shows the worst-case/highest-impact result if conditions align unfavorably, while the "Bust" scenario shows the best-case/lowest-impact result if the forecast doesn't materialize as expected.
The 'Boom' Scenario
If the mid-level moisture fetch is slightly more robust and overcomes the low-level dry air quickly, a broad swath of 1-2 inches of snow could develop across the southern half of the state, with up to 3 inches in the Southeast Coalfields.
The 'Bust' Scenario
If the low-level dry air remains dominant, much of the moisture will sublimate as virga, resulting in nothing more than scattered flurries and trace accumulations for most of the state.
Model Disagreements
When models disagree, a call must be made to determine the most likely outcome. This decision is based on a combination of factors including model performance, historical data, and the models general accounting of each climatic region of Kentucky.
The Virga vs. Accumulation War
The NAM and Euro highlight significant dry air in the sub-cloud layer (below 850mb), suggesting much of the light precipitation will evaporate before reaching the ground. The GEM and GFS are more aggressive, suggesting the forcing is strong enough to saturate the column and produce measurable accumulation.
Why NAM Wins
The NAM typically handles the resolution of shallow arctic air masses and associated dry-air entrainment better than global models in the 0-48h window. Its more conservative QPF totals are more realistic given the high dewpoint depressions.
The Orographic Enhancement Split
Global models (GEM/GFS) show a significant boost in precipitation totals across the Southeast Coalfields due to upslope flow, while the NAM remains more muted.
Why GEM Wins
The GEM often excels in cold-sector orographic scenarios, correctly identifying the ability of higher terrain to squeeze out moisture even in dry arctic regimes.
