Statewide Arctic Blast: Hazardous Powder Snow and Sleet Mix
A potent winter storm will sweep through Kentucky this Saturday, delivering a widespread accumulation of dry, powdery snow. Bitterly cold arctic air already in place will maximize snow ratios, making for efficient accumulation. Southern and South-Central Kentucky will see a transition to sleet pellets as a warm layer develops aloft.
Confidence Assessment
Confidence is penalized by the distance from the event (Day 4), the high volatility of winter precipitation types, and significant disagreement between the ECMWF totals and other guidance.

Purchase Area
Snow will begin Saturday morning and accumulate steadily. Expect around 4.5 inches of fluffy, light snow that will blow easily in the wind.
Northwest Pennyrile
Snow will arrive by mid-morning, with accumulations around 4 inches expected by midnight. Roads will become hazardous quickly.
Southwest Pennyrile
The heaviest snow in the state is likely here. Expect accumulations around 7 inches of dry, powdery snow through Saturday night.
Barren River
A messy mix of snow and ice pellets will fall Saturday. Expect around 5.5 inches of total accumulation, which will be denser than pure snow.
Louisville Metro
Snow will arrive Saturday afternoon. Expect around 3 inches of light, fluffy snow by midnight, making the evening commute difficult.
Lincoln Trail
Steady snow will develop in the afternoon. Expect accumulations around 4.5 inches, with higher amounts possible along the ridges.
Lake Cumberland
Snow and ice pellets will move in Saturday afternoon. Expect around 4.5 inches of a heavy mix, making for very slick road conditions.
Northern Kentucky
Dangerous cold is the main story, with wind chills well below zero. Light snow will bring around 2 inches of accumulation.
Inner Bluegrass
Snow will arrive Saturday evening. Expect around 3 inches of powder. Gusty winds will cause some blowing and drifting of snow.
Bluegrass Foothills
Snow will pick up intensity late Saturday. Expect accumulations around 4 inches. Driving will become difficult as roads freeze over.
Northeast Kentucky
A light snowfall will bring around 1.5 inches to the region. The main concern is the extreme cold and icy valley roads.
Southeast Kentucky
Light snow and ice pellets will arrive Saturday night. Expect around 2.5 inches of accumulation. Higher peaks may see more pure snow.
Possible Outcomes
Weather forecasting involves uncertainty. Below are two scenarios representing the range of possible outcomes: the "Boom" scenario shows the worst-case/highest-impact result if conditions align unfavorably, while the "Bust" scenario shows the best-case/lowest-impact result if the forecast doesn't materialize as expected.
The 'Boom' Scenario
The ECMWF scenario verifies, where moisture advection is significantly more robust, leading to 8-11 inches of fluffy powder across the southern half of the state.
The 'Bust' Scenario
The NAM/GEM dry slot scenario wins, or the initial dry arctic air (virga) takes longer to saturate, resulting in a widespread 1-2 inch dusting with minimal impact in the north.
Model Disagreements
When models disagree, a call must be made to determine the most likely outcome. This decision is based on a combination of factors including model performance, historical data, and the models general accounting of each climatic region of Kentucky.
The 850mb Warm Nose Conflict
The NAM insists on a warm layer (+1C to +2C) at 850mb across southern Kentucky, which would transition snow to sleet. Global models (GFS/ECMWF/GEM) maintain a completely sub-freezing column.
Why NAM Wins
The NAM mesoscale resolution typically handles shallow thermal inversions and 'warm noses' better than global models within a 48-hour window.
The Snowfall Magnitude Skew
ECMWF is a massive outlier, forecasting double the snowfall of the GFS and NAM, with totals exceeding 10 inches in areas where others show 4-5 inches.
Why BLEND Wins
Per protocol, the ECMWF outlier (>2x GFS) is treated as a high-end scenario rather than the baseline. A blend of GFS, GEM, and NAM provides a more physically consistent result.
